This 3-part course will provide you with an awareness of some of the key considerations when carrying out aesthetic treatments for people with skin of colour.

This is Module 1 of 3. You will need to complete all 3 for the full course.

The Learning objectives for Module 1 are listed below:  

The science of skin of colour (melanin-rich skin)

• The physiology of skin of colour: including its unique structure, function, and susceptibility to certain skin conditions
• Skin types and their characteristics: various skin types that are commonly found in people with skin of colour, such as Fitzpatrick skin types 4-6, (sometimes referred to as types IV, V and VI) and the characteristics that are associated with each skin type
• Common skin concerns and conditions: skin concerns and conditions that are more prevalent in people with skin of colour, such as hyperpigmentation, keloids, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Qualification information

On successful completion of all the modules, learners will receive the ‘Level 2 Award in the Awareness of Skin of Colour (Melanin Rich Skin) for Aesthetic Practitioners’. This is an OFQUAL Regulated qualification issued by ‘Gatehouse Awards (GA)’.

The Gatehouse Awards (GA) Registration Fee of £80.00 and the Skin College Processing (SCP) Fee of £20.00 are payable separately as they are VAT exempt. (Payable when you reach the final Module)

Assessment process

• In the final module you will be required to take an external e-assessment which is set and assessed by Gatehouse Awards
